Long Bio

Versatile Mezzo-soprano Helen Tintes-Schuermann performs throughout the USA and Europe in operatic roles including Carmen, Azucena (Il Trovatore), the Zia Principessa (Suor Angelica), the Medium and Elizabeth Proctor (Crucible) and appears frequently as a concert soloist and recitalist. The mezzo-soprano has sung at many European theaters and festivals, including Barcelona’s Teatro del Gran Liceu with Dame Gwyneth Jones, the Alte Oper in Frankfurt, the Festival du Printemps in Monte Carlo and with Theater an der Wien/Raimund Theater in Vienna, Austria.

She has interpreted numerous 20th Century works (including numerous European and World Premieres) and has sung in festivals throughout Austria, Spain, Germany and Switzerland, where she also recorded for radio and television. Outstanding performances throughout the Southeastern United States (while Tintes was on the faculty of USC), included Verdi’s Requiem, Bernstein’s Jeremiah Symphony,works of Bach and Handel with the Naples Bach Ensemble, the roles of Baba in Menotti’s The Medium, Mme. Armfeldt in Sondheim’s A Little Night Music, Mrs. Peachum in Weill’s Three Penny Opera (Southern Exposure) and the Mother in Sondheim's Into the Woods (St. Petersburg Opera, Fl).

The mezzo’s repertoire encompasses major works of opera and oratorio, as well as German Lied, Spanish Song and New Music. Recent performances include Suzuki in Puccini’s Madame Butterfly with Battle Creek Symphony, Michigan, Bruckner’s Te Deum and Brahms’ Alto Rhapsody with the Columbia Choral Society and recital-masterclasses in China, Spain, Texas, Minnesota, Illinois, Florida and Virginia. A cd entitled Para Entonces, featuring songs by Spanish and American composers, was released in 2008. She recently performed and taught at the F.I.M.E.L Festival with famed Spanish mezzo Teresa Berganza and collaborates in 2011-12 with colleagues in Spain in recital and masterclasses.

Tintes-Schuermann received the Doctor of Music degree from Northwestern University and degrees from the University of Minnesota, Mozarteum in Salzburg, Austria and the Escuela de Canto in Madrid, Spain. Her teachers and coaches include Elizabeth Fischer, Sherrill Milnes, William Warfield, Paul von Schilhawsky, Miguel Zanetti and Dale Fundling. She is co-founder and director of the International Course in Spanish Music, now the ISMCenter. Dr. Tintes-Schuermann joined the faculty of the Konservatorium Wien University (Opera and Solo Singing) in September, 2010.

Die in North Dakota (USA) geborene Helen Tintes-Schürmann hat in vielen Rollen geglänzt—in den USA genauso wie in Europa. Beeindruckend ist die Bandbreite mit der sie sich mit ihrer grossartigen Stimme in die Herzen vieler gesungen hat. Von der Suzuki (Madame Butterfly) bis zur Carmen, von Interpretationen von Werken des 20. und 21. Jhd. bis zu Oratorien, vom spanischen bis zum amerikanischen Liedgut. Sie gastierte u.a. in den USA, Italien, Spanien, Deutschland und Österreich.

Zur Zeit unterrichtet sie am Konservatorium Wien (Privatuniversität) und gibt Meisterkurse in den USA, China und Spanien.
